New ODISI patent: an innovative drainage and irrigation solution for green roofs

The OdysséeLab team is delighted to announce that on January 5, 2023, we filed a patent for an innovative irrigation solution for green roofs: ODISI.

We have developed a unique sheet combining drainage and irrigation system. It can be used in cities to create Urban cool islands (green roofs, lawns, vegetable gardens, sport fields, etc.).

The principle is to collect and drain rainwater through the drains to a storage area for reuse during drier periods, thanks to an integrated drip irrigation system.

Installing a green roof on a building usually involves two completely separate trades.

  • In the first instance, the building and civil engineering sector handles the construction of the building, in particular the waterproofing of the structure to ensure that it is watertight. For the installation of a green roof, roofing experts also ensure drainage of rainwater and runoff (drains, collectors and pipes). Such drainage is necessary when installing a green roof, which retains large quantities of water.
  • In a second phase, plant specialists such as landscapers take charge of planting the green roof, selecting the plants and the substrate for plant growth. Landscapers are also in charge of irrigation, ensuring a supply of water in dry periods, for the proper growth of the plants.

The ODISI invention brings together the knowledge of landscapers, for irrigation, with the technical expertise of drainage layer manufacturers and building professionals. We have configured and moved an irrigation system from the surface, integrating it directly within the drainage layer.

This drip irrigation system (in blue on the illustration), with a network of tubes specifically positioned in relation to the drains (in yellow on the illustration), ensures improved humidification of the substrate, while limiting the loss of supplied water.

The principle is similar for the installation under lawn and for the management of cool islands.
